Letter from Journalist Temesgen Desalegn’s mother
Date: February 9, 2015
To: The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission,
Addis Ababa

Re: Visitation Rights for my Son Temesgen Desalegn

Temesgen is my second born son. Many testify to his having been a caring, conscientious and patriotic individual beginning at a very young age. Now, just because he cared, he finds himself suffering in prison, without even visits from friends and family. As his mother, I find this excruciating. Please help my son. Please help me to at least be able to go visit him where he is. It has now been a full month since I have heard my son’s voice.

His younger brother Tariku Desalegn brought food to Ziway prison for Temesgen from home. The prison guards beat him up, spilled the food he had carried and sent him back on his way. I would imagine you also have children, and understands how it feels.

I am but an elder. It would have been a great blessing for me to live out the remaining years hearing my son’s voice, giving him courage, and seeing him regularly. Please help me. I miss my son terribly! I don’t even have any idea why he is not allowed visitors. Even after his brother was beaten, his friends and brothers have been turned away without being allowed to visit him.

Temesgen is the son who takes good care of me and gives me courage. I have no one else. My only support is derived from what little my children are able to provide. Now, my other children are occupied trying to find opportunity to see their dear brother.

For the sake of your own mothers, if you are able, please see to it that my son is released from prison and that I can live out my days with him by my side. If this is beyond your ability, however, I respectfully request that I along with my other children and others be allowed to visit him regularly. I know my son. He is very sensitive. Being able to see his family will be a source of comfort for him. I am a powerless elderly woman. I can only entrust this to you.

With God’s help, I am hopeful that you will take care of this for me and allow me access to my son. May the Archangel St. Michael support and guide you. I’m sure you understand what this feels like to a mother. It provokes a lot of anxiety. So please, help me and my children.

Mrs. Fanaye Irdachew
